Philippe Gras

1942-2007

  • 1942. Naissance à Paris le 16 avril dans le 15ème arrondissement.
  • Années 1960. Études à l’École Supérieure des Arts Graphiques, emploi dans la photo de mode ; premiers reportages sur les concerts de jazz.
  • 1967-1982. Activité de photographe free-lance consacrée à la création contemporaine (musique, danse, théâtre), collaboration aux revues Actuel, L’Art Vivant, Jazz Hot, etc.
  • Années 1960 à 1990. Participation à de nombreux festivals de théâtre et de musique modernes, collaboration régulière avec le Festival des Arts Contemporains de La Rochelle et le Festival d’Automne de Paris; maquettes et illustrations de pochettes de disques microsillons et CD.
  • 1970-1983. Assistant ou photographe de plateau auprès des cinéastes Alain Corneau, Lê Lam, Jean-Noël Delamarre ; co-auteur de deux moyens métrages sur le musicien Don Cherry et sur le sculpteur Raymond Delamarre.
  • 1988. Livre de photographies sur les temples d’Angkor avec textes de Michel Butor et Nouth Narang.
  • 1982-2007. Collaboration avec l’Agence pour le Développement Régional du Cinéma ; articles et livres sur les imageries populaires et sur les salles de cinéma ; séries photographiques sur le métro parisien, Mai 68, le London East End, les affiches de cinéma, le tatouage… Voyages et reportages au Bhoutan, en Iran, en Corée du Sud, au Cambodge, au Vietnam, en Hongrie.
  • 2007. Mort brusque à son domicile parisien le 22 février dans le 13ème arrondissement Paris ; hommages dans Le Monde et sur la radio France Culture.
  • Depuis 2008. Exposition L’Œil Musical de Philippe Gras à la Cité de la Musique puis dans une longue série de Centres Culturels et de festivals en France et à l’étranger ; exposition sur l’opéra Einstein on the Beach à Orléans, Montpellier et Paris ; exposition Budapest 90 à Paris, Budapest et Tours ; exposition Rock Années 1970 à Agen ; exposition Au Cœur de Mai 68 à la Mairie du 13ème et dans plus d’une centaine de Centres ou Instituts Culturels, d’Alliances françaises, d’universités, de musées situés sur les cinq continents.

1942-2007

  • 1942 : Born in Paris, childhood in the 15th district, around the Felix-Faure Avenue,
  • Sixties :  studies at the Ecole Estienne of Graphic Arts, works with  the Georges Véron Studio specializing in fashion photography ; first coverings of jazz concerts,
  • 1967-1982 : free lance practice dedicated to jazz, Free Jazz, contemporary music, ethnic sounds, progressive rock, dance, theater, first photographs published in art and music magazines : Actuel, L’Art Vivant, Jazz Hot, etc.,
  • from the Sixties to the Eighties : participates to numerous festivals of modern music and theater, extensive coverage of the Amougies, Isle of Wight, Saint-Paul de Vence and Algiers festivals (Nights of the Maeght Foundation, Panafrican Culture Festival) ; long standing collaboration with the La Rochelle Festival of Contemporary Arts and the Paris Automn Festival ; design and illustration of numerous LP covers,
  •  1970-1983 : works with film directors : Lê Lam, Jean-Noël Delamarre, co-author of two medium-length features, one on the musician Don Cherry, the other on the sculptor Raymond Delamarre,
  • 1982 : starts working for the Agency for the development of Cinema in the Provinces; participates to articles and books on popular iconography and movie houses architecture; important photographic projects dedicated to the Paris Subway, the events of May 1968 in France, the London East End, the hand painted posters of popular movies, the practice of tatoo, and popular iconography,
  • 1988 : book of photographs on the Angkor temples, with introductory texts of Michel Butor et Nouth Narang,  photographic assignments in Hungary, Bhutan, Iran, South Korea, Cambodia and Viêt-Nam,
  • 2007 : sudden death at home in Paris (13th district) on February 22, obituaries in Le Monde and on the public Radio channel France Culture.
  • Since 2008. ‘L’Œil Musical de Philippe Gras’ exhibition at the Cité de la Musique in Paris then in many Cultural Centres and festivals in France and abroad; exhibition devoted to Bob Wilson and Philip Glass’s opera ‘Einstein on the Beach’ in Orléans, Montpellier and Paris; ‘Budapest 90’ exhibition in Paris, Budapest and Tours; ‘Rock Années 1970’ exhibition in Agen; ‘Au Coeur de Mai 68’ exhibition at the 13th Arrondissement townhall in Paris and in more than a hundred Cultural Centres and Alliance Française institutes, universities, and museums around the World.
